* The use of the prefix ‘2’ in Australian infantry battalions of the Second World War, e.g. 2/15th, indicated a battalion raised in the First World War and now raised for the second time. Similarly, the Australian expeditionary force, known as 2nd Australian Imperial Force, acknowledged that there had been a 1st AIF in the earlier war. New Zealand nomenclature followed similar logic: Freyberg commanded 2nd NZ Expeditionary Force, but battalion nomenclature did not follow the Australian model.

* Formed in 1725 as independent companies but known as The Black Watch because of its dark tartan sett, it became The Highland Regiment in 1739 and was granted the Royal preix in 1758. From 1881 to 1934 the official title was The Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) but this changed to The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) in that year. Today it is The Black Watch, 3rd Bn Royal Regiment of Scotland.

* Although the regiment took part in the early stage of the pursuit after Alamein, it was withdrawn in mid-November and sent to Cairo to retrain as a motorized infantry battalion. On 14 January 1943 it was redesignated as 14th Highland Light Infantry, a highly unpopular decision as the HLI, in spite of its title, was a lowland regiment. At the parade to mark their conversion the regiment responded to the call for three cheers with three hearty boos.
